Types of Housing

 

There are several different housing options for people with disabilities. If you cannot afford market-rate or affordable housing, you can apply for housing subsidies that cover a portion of your rent. There are two different types of subsidies:

• Project-based apartments have low, subsidized rent that stays with the unit. A person’s rent will only be subsidized if they live in the unit.
  • o Project-based apartments are normally located in either public housing run by local housing authorities, or by private developments
• Mobile vouchers follow a person if they live in housing that meets certain criteria. Mobile vouchers will cover a portion of the rent in market-rate units to make them more affordable for the voucher holder.

• Affordable housing are units whose monthly rent is based on the average income in your area. If you live in area where income is higher, the rent will be higher.
