Getting Ready for Winter
Winter has just begun!
Wowza...It’s cold out there!! With the snow, ice and wind, I hope we don’t lose power!
It is inevitable that at some point we will lose power. Hopefully for only a very short time, but either way here are a few reminders:
- Don’t forget to check the battery status for flashlights, power wheelchairs, medical or assistive devices, transistor radios (oh yes, I still have one). What if your cell phone dies? I am not running out to start my car to plug my phone in, and I’m sure many of you do not have a car.
- Check what you have for food! I went through my cabinets to see what I had to eat; crackers, peanut butter, beans…. well even cowboys ate them out of a can. I think I’ll look in the supermarket for something a little more appetizing. Maybe some bread and water, aren’t they the first things to go? And toilet paper! I fill the bathtub with water to use to flush, just in case.
- Have a to go bag! I always have one. I am not sure where exactly I would go, but I’m ready! Warm clothes, medicines, blanket, Medical Insurance Cards, Emergency Contact Information, and don’t forget pet treats, they are not very forgiving…. I know.
- Don’t forget items for your car! If you do decide to leave home in your vehicle, check that you have blankets, jumper cables, spare tire, emergency flares, empty gas can, flashlight, tool box, tow rope, all the things you really should have in your car all the time.
And please, it is the season of giving, check on your friends and neighbors and pass my words of wisdom….Better to be ready, than not!!
